SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending July 12, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 349,000, a decrease of 28,000 from the previous week's
unrevised figure of 377,000. The 4-week moving average was 348,750, an increase
of 250 from the previous week's unrevised average of 348,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending July 5, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the
prior week's unrevised rate of 2.1 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending July 5 was 2,378,000, a decrease of 10,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,388,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,338,500, an
increase of 28,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,309,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 437,912 in the week ending July 12, an increase of 67,634
from the previous week. There were 449,528 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during
the week ending July 5, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,268,436, an increase of 214,386 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,493,008.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
June 28.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 3,136 in the week ending July 5, an increase of 790 from the prior
week. There were 1,797 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 98 from the preceding week.
There were 18,558 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending June 28, a decrease of 859 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,475, a decrease of 423 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 28 were
in Puerto Rico (5.7 percent), Alaska (3.7), Rhode Island (3.5), Pennsylvania
(2.7), California (2.6), Hawaii (2.6), New Jersey (2.5), New York (2.5), Oregon
(2.5), and Washington (2.5).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 5 were
in Michigan (+21,002), New York (+8,473), Ohio (+7,154), Wisconsin (+6,640),
and Indiana (+5,574), while the largest decreases were in California (-3,003),
Massachusetts (-2,053), New Jersey (-1,966), Louisiana (-703), and Mississippi
(-537).
