SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending June 21, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 332,000, a decrease of 14,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 346,000. The 4-week moving average was 338,750, an increase
of 3,500 from the previous week's revised average of 335,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending June 14, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending June 14 was 2,308,000, an increase of 42,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,266,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,282,000, an
increase of 21,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,260,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 291,255 in the week ending June 21, a decrease of 9,999
from the previous week. There were 312,226 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during
the week ending June 14, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,102,871, an
increase of 40,668 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1
percent and the volume was 2,342,014.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending June
7.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,870 in the week ending June 14, a decrease of 155 from the prior
week. There were 1,597 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 145 from the preceding week.
There were 18,839 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending June 7, an increase of 836 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,242, a decrease of 345 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 7 were in
Puerto Rico (5.7 percent), Alaska (4.2), Rhode Island (3.0), California (2.7),
Hawaii (2.7), Oregon (2.6), Pennsylvania (2.6), Washington (2.6), Arkansas
(2.4), New Jersey (2.4), and West Virginia (2.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 14 were
in Illinois (+1,994), Michigan (+1,833), Ohio (+1,297), Pennsylvania (+1,180),
and Indiana (+599), while the largest decreases were in Tennessee (-2,087),
California (-1,984), New York (-1,688), Texas Texas (-1,531), and North
Carolina (-1,121).
