SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending June 14, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 347,000, an increase of 8,000 from the previous week's
unrevised figure of 339,000. The 4-week moving average was 335,500, an increase
of 6,250 from the previous week's unrevised average of 329,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending June 7, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending June 7 was 2,295,000, an increase of 21,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,274,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,266,500, an
increase of 7,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,259,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 301,553 in the week ending June 14, a decrease of 8,413
from the previous week. There were 307,141 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during
the week ending June 7, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,088,653, a
decrease of 5,656 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.0
percent and the volume was 2,278,659.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending May
31.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,020 in the week ending June 7, an increase of 230 from the prior
week. There were 1,739 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 383 from the preceding week.
There were 17,962 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending May 31, an increase of 109 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,635, an increase of 699 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 31 were in
Puerto Rico (6.3 percent), Alaska (4.5), Rhode Island (3.2), California (2.8),
Oregon (2.7), Washington (2.7), Arkansas (2.7), Hawaii (2.6), Pennsylvania
(2.6), and New Jersey (2.5).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 7 were
in California (+12,390), Pennsylvania (+5,652), Tennessee (+3,573), Illinois
(+3,476), and New York (+3,190), while the largest decreases were in Arkansas
(-247), Maine (-122), Kentucky (-121), and Kansas (-58).
