SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending May 31, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 337,000, an increase of 19,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 318,000. The 4-week moving average was 323,750, a decrease of
2,750 from the previous week's revised average of 326,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.0 percent for the week ending May 24, an increase of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week's revised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending May 24 was 2,303,000, an increase of 77,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,226,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,270,750, an increase of 4,000 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,266,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 248,029 in the week ending May 31, a decrease of
16,658 from the previous week. There were 266,116 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent during the week ending May 24, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,038,419, a decrease of 60,519 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,294,656.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week
ending May 17.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,589 in the week ending May 24, an increase of 146 from the
prior week. There were 1,657 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 10 from the preceding week.
There were 17,568 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 17, a decrease of 1,603 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 18,929, a
decrease of 234 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
May 17 were in Puerto Rico (5.6 percent), Alaska (4.9), Rhode Island (3.3),
California (2.8), North Dakota (2.8), Washington (2.8), Hawaii (2.6), Oregon
(2.6), Pennsylvania (2.6), and Vermont (2.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
May 24 were in Wisconsin (+1,061), North Carolina (+1,037), Georgia (+1,021),
Arkansas (+983), and Alabama (+889), while the largest decreases were in Ohio
(-1,903), Louisiana (-1,876), Kentucky (-1,849), Tennessee (-1,425), and Puerto
Rico (-862).
