SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending May 24, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 322,000, unchanged from the previous week's unrevised figure of 322,000. The 4-week moving average was 327,500, a decrease of 6,000 from the previous week's revised average of 333,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent for the week ending May 17, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.0 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 17 was 2,288,000, an increase of 15,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,273,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,284,000, an increase of 10,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,273,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 268,130 in the week ending May 24, an increase of 304 from the previous week. There were 287,622 initial claims in the comparable week in 1996.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during the week ending May 17, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,157,444, a decrease of 31,538 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,371,899.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending May 10.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,446 in the week ending May 17, a decrease of 22 from the prior week. There were 1,655 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 34 from the preceding week.

There were 19,181 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 10, an increase of 753 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 19,165, a decrease of 315 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 10 were in Puerto Rico (6.1 percent), Alaska (5.2), Rhode Island (3.5), California (2.9), Washington (2.9), Oregon (2.8), Vermont (2.8), Hawaii (2.7), Pennsylvania (2.7), Idaho (2.6), and Montana (2.6).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 17 were in Louisiana (+1,857), Kentucky (+1,612), Missouri (+1,440), Mississippi (+1,237), and Puerto Rico (+969), while the largest decreases were in California (-3,327), North Carolina (-2,768), New York (-1,898), Pennsylvania (-1,866), and Michigan (-1,521).
