SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending May 10, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 319,000, a decrease of 31,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 350,000. The 4-week moving average was 333,500, a decrease of
3,250 from the previous week's revised average of 336,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending May 3, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending May 3 was 2,314,000, an increase of 23,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,291,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,279,000, an
increase of 5,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,273,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 278,841 in the week ending May 10, a decrease of 17,268
from the previous week. There were 303,536 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during
the week ending May 3, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week.
The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,237,713, a decrease of 87,776 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,461,933.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending April
26.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,774 in the week ending May 3, an increase of 296 from the prior week.
There were 1,555 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 57
from the preceding week.
There were 19,624 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending April 26, an increase of 96 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 19,733, a decrease of 268 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 26 were
in Puerto Rico (6.1 percent), Alaska (5.7), Rhode Island (3.7), Vermont (3.5),
Maine (3.1), California (3.0), Washington (3.0), Oregon (3.0), Montana (2.9),
Idaho (2.8), New Jersey (2.8), and Pennsylvania (2.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 3 were
in New York (+6,381), California (+4,490), North Carolina (+3,185), Kentucky
(+1,488), and Georgia (+1,246), while the largest decreases were in Michigan
(-4,412), North Dakota (-4,240), Massachusetts (-3,429), Louisiana (-1,994),
and Ohio (-1,809).
