SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending April 26, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 347,000, an increase of 28,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 319,000. The 4-week moving average was 330,500, an increase
of 8,750 from the previous week's revised average of 321,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending April 19, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending April 19 was 2,273,000, an increase of 2,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,271,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,282,250, an
increase of 1,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,280,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 297,103 in the week ending April 26, an increase of 9,719
from the previous week. There were 292,052 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during
the week ending April 19, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,350,675, a decrease of 106,167 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,635,448.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending April
12.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,507 in the week ending April 19, a decrease of 143 from the prior
week. There were 1,650 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 96 from the preceding week.
There were 21,410 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending April 12, an increase of 476 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 20,578, an increase of 4 from the
prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 12 were
in Alaska (6.3 percent), Puerto Rico (6.1), Rhode Island (3.9), Vermont (3.5),
Maine (3.4), Montana (3.4), Washington (3.3), California (3.2), Idaho (3.1),
and Oregon (3.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 19
were in Missouri (+2,263), Rhode Island (+1,053), Ohio (+440), Oregon (+177),
and Arkansas (+89), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina
(-5,239), Texas (-4,103), Pennsylvania (-4,033), New York (-3,250), and
Tennessee (-3,102).
