SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending April 19, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 324,000, a decrease of 8,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 332,000. The 4-week moving average was 323,000, an increase of 3,250 from the previous week's unrevised average of 319,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent for the week ending April 12, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.0 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending April 12 was 2,290,000, a decrease of 4,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,294,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,286,000, a decrease of 4,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,290,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 291,852 in the week ending April 19, a decrease of 37,741 from the previous week. There were 336,296 initial claims in the comparable week in 1996.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending April 12, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,477,435, a decrease of 20,506 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.5 percent and the volume was 2,810,900.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending April 5.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,650 in the week ending April 12, a decrease of 180 from the prior week. There were 1,744 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 100 from the preceding week.

There were 20,928 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 5, a decrease of 1,979 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 20,558, a decrease of 627 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 5 were in Alaska (6.6 percent), Puerto Rico (5.7), Rhode Island (4.4), Maine (3.6), Montana (3.4), Vermont (3.4), Oregon (3.3), Washington (3.3), California (3.2), Idaho (3.1), New Jersey (3.1), and Pennsylvania (3.1).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 12 were in Michigan (+4,200), Puerto Rico (+2,767), North Carolina (+2,746), Alabama (+2,566), and Washington (+2,055), while the largest decreases were in California (-3,275), New Jersey (-2,547), Oregon (-1,948), Illinois (-1,750), and Massachusetts (-1,558).
