SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending April 12, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 332,000, an increase of 8,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 324,000. The 4-week moving average was 319,750, an increase
of 4,500 from the previous week's revised average of 315,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending April 5, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending April 5 was 2,316,000, an increase of 18,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,298,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,296,750, an
increase of 1,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,295,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 329,583 in the week ending April 12, an increase of 18,413
from the previous week. There were 344,312 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during
the week ending April 5, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,522,647, a decrease of 101,177 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.5 percent and the volume was 2,809,377.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending March
29.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,830 in the week ending April 5, an increase of 558 from the prior
week. There were 1,644 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 113 from the preceding week.
There were 22,951 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending March 29, an increase of 1,363 from the previous week.
Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 21,244, an increase of 100
from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending March 29 were
in Alaska (5.9 percent), Puerto Rico (5.8), Rhode Island (4.3), Montana (3.9),
Idaho (3.5), Maine (3.5), California (3.4), Oregon (3.4), Pennsylvania (3.4),
and Washington (3.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 5 were
in New Jersey (+4,576), California (+3,606), North Carolina (+3,470), New York
(+3,436), and Pennsylvania (+3,322), while the largest decreases were in
Georgia (-1,247), Virginia (-1,096), Missouri (-570), Idaho (-255), and West
Virginia (-245).
