SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending April 5, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 318,000, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 312,000. The 4-week moving average was 313,750, an increase
of 2,250 from the previous week's revised average of 311,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending March 29, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending March 29 was 2,308,000, an increase of 40,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 2,268,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,298,000, a decrease of 5,750 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,303,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 305,713 in the week ending April 5, an increase of 36,901
from the previous week. There were 354,477 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent during
the week ending March 29, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,635,301, an
increase of 2,150 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.6
percent and the volume was 2,972,000.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending March
22.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,272 in the week ending March 29, an increase of 9 from the prior
week. There were 1,531 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 225 from the preceding week.
There were 21,653 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending March 22, a decrease of 2,717 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 21,203, a decrease of 815 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending March 22 were
in Alaska (6.9 percent), Puerto Rico (5.8), Rhode Island (4.6), Montana (3.8),
Idaho (3.6), Maine (3.6), Washington (3.6), California (3.4), Oregon (3.4), and
Vermont (3.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending March 29
were in Georgia (+1,553), Oregon (+917), Missouri (+797), Wisconsin (+629), and
Virginia (+243), while the largest decreases were in Maryland (-2,774),
Louisiana (-2,657), North Carolina (-2,583), Texas (-1,990), and California
(-1,895).
