SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending March 29, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 314,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 313,000. The 4-week moving average was 312,500, an increase
of 500 from the previous week's revised average of 312,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent for the week ending March 22, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending March 22 was 2,300,000, a decrease of 10,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,310,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,312,750, a
decrease of 14,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,326,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 270,003 in the week ending March 29, a decrease of 23,409
from the previous week. There were 344,228 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent during
the week ending March 22, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,669,758, a decrease of 111,537 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.8 percent and the volume was 3,112,606.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending March
15.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,278 in the week ending March 22, a decrease of 208 from the prior
week. There were 1,764 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 34 from the preceding week.
There were 24,081 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending March 15, an increase of 620 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,029, an increase of 105 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending March 15 were
in Alaska (6.4 percent), Puerto Rico (5.9), Rhode Island (4.8), Montana (4.3),
Idaho (3.8), Maine (3.8), Oregon (3.8), Pennsylvania (3.8), Washington (3.6),
and West Virginia (3.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending March 22
were in Maryland (+2,608), Louisiana (+1,847), Ohio (+1,114), Illinois (+958),
and Mississippi (+372), while the largest decreases were in Tennessee (-2,468),
Oregon (-1,596), New York (-1,220), Alabama (-807), and Texas (-720).
