SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending March 1, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 310,000, a decrease of 6,000 from the previous week's
unrevised figure of 316,000. The 4-week moving average was 310,000, a decrease
of 3,500 from the previous week's revised average of 313,500. This is the
lowest since May 13, 1989, when it was 309,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1
percent for the week ending Feb. 22, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.1 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Feb. 22 was 2,377,000, a decrease of 27,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,404,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,398,000, a
decrease of 16,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,414,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 315,872 in the week ending March 1, an increase of 6,686
from the previous week. There were 368,044 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent during
the week ending Feb. 22, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,002,558, an
increase of 50,945 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.9
percent and the volume was 3,282,015.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending Feb.
15.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,478 in the week ending Feb. 22, a decrease of 248 from the prior
week. There were 1,676 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 97 from the preceding week.
There were 27,337 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Feb. 15, an increase of 2,092 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,255, a decrease of 175 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Feb. 15 were
in Alaska (6.6 percent), Rhode Island (5.2), Puerto Rico (4.9), Montana (4.5),
Idaho (4.2), West Virginia (4.0), Maine (3.9), Pennsylvania (3.8), Washington
(3.8), California (3.7), and Oregon (3.7).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 22 were
in Massachusetts (+3,545), North Carolina (+2,345), California (+1,645),
Connecticut (+1,422), and Rhode Island (+1,152), while the largest decreases
were in New York (-2,889), Ohio (-2,597), Pennsylvania (-2,209), Arkansas
(-1,513), and South Carolina (-1,351).
