SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Feb. 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 316,000, an increase of 11,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 305,000. The 4-week moving average was 313,250, a decrease of
4,000 from the previous week's revised average of 317,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1
percent for the week ending Feb. 15, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.1 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Feb. 15 was 2,412,000, an increase of 4,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,408,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,416,750, a
decrease of 11,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,427,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 308,735 in the week ending Feb. 22, a decrease of 10,902
from the previous week. There were 347,053 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent during
the week ending Feb. 15, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,962,375, an
increase of 4,823 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.9
percent and the volume was 3,281,051.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Feb. 8.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,731 in the week ending Feb. 15, a decrease of 405 from the prior
week. There were 1,808 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 240 from the preceding week.
There were 25,310 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Feb. 8, a decrease of 3,999 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,461, a decrease of 206 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Feb. 8 were in
Alaska (7.5 percent), Puerto Rico (5.8), Rhode Island (5.3), Montana (4.3),
Idaho (4.2), Maine (4.1), Washington (3.9), Oregon (3.8), Pennsylvania (3.8),
California (3.6), and West Virginia (3.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 15 were
in Virginia (+406), New Mexico (+321), Iowa (+30), and Maine (+13), while the
largest decreases were in California (-21,946), North Carolina (-3,803),
Illinois (-2,661), New York (-2,022), and New Jersey (-1,687).
