SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Feb. 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 309,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 308,000. The 4-week moving average was 318,250, a decrease of
7,250 from the previous week's revised average of 325,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1
percent for the week ending Feb. 8, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.1 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Feb. 8 was 2,430,000, an increase of 27,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,403,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,433,250, a
decrease of 1,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,434,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 323,627 in the week ending Feb. 15, a decrease of 47,138
from the previous week. There were 395,332 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent during
the week ending Feb. 8, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,984,405, a
decrease of 41,563 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.9
percent and the volume was 3,296,740.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Feb. 1.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,136 in the week ending Feb. 8, an increase of 158 from the prior
week. There were 2,048 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 87 from the preceding week.
There were 29,309 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Feb. 1, an increase of 1,448 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,667, a decrease of 967 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Feb. 1 were in
Alaska (6.8 percent), Puerto Rico (5.7), Rhode Island (5.4), Idaho (4.7),
Montana (4.7), West Virginia (4.1), Washington (4.0), Oregon (3.9),
Pennsylvania (3.9), and California (3.7).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 8 were
in California (+5,579), North Carolina (+2,032), Texas (+1,278), Minnesota
(+751), and South Carolina (+742), while the largest decreases were in
Pennsylvania (-2,979), Ohio (-2,506), Iowa (-1,389), New Mexico (-1,172), and
Illinois (-1,108).
