SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Feb. 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 309,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 324,000. The 4-week moving average was 327,750, a decrease of
3,000 from the previous week's revised average of 330,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1
percent for the week ending Feb. 1, unchanged from the prior week's revised
rate of 2.1 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Feb. 1 was 2,432,000, a decrease of 18,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,450,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,450,500, a
decrease of 35,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,486,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 370,072 in the week ending Feb. 8, a decrease of 10,035
from the previous week. There were 440,961 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent during
the week ending Feb. 1, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,046,792, a
decrease of 25,247 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 3.0
percent and the volume was 3,415,635.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Jan. 25.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,975 in the week ending Feb. 1, an increase of 153 from the prior
week. There were 1,959 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 29 from the preceding week.
There were 27,859 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Jan. 25, a decrease of 1,882 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 24,631, an increase of 1,411 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 25 were
in Alaska (7.8 percent), Puerto Rico (6.3), Rhode Island (5.3), Montana (4.5),
Idaho (4.2), Maine (4.1), Washington (4.0), California (3.9), Oregon (3.9),
Pennsylvania (3.9), and West Virginia (3.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 1 were
in California (+11,085), Iowa (+1,572), Connecticut (+1,550), New York
(+1,218), and Florida (+1,079), while the largest decreases were in Tennessee
(-6,239), Texas (-5,220), North Carolina (-4,467), Georgia (-3,151), and
Alabama (-2,411).
