SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Feb. 1, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 325,000, a decrease of 12,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 337,000. The 4-week moving average was 331,000, a decrease of
10,250 from the previous week's revised average of 341,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent for the week ending Jan. 25, unchanged from the prior week's revised
rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Jan. 25 was 2,469,000, an increase of 1,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,468,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,489,750, a
decrease of 16,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,506,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 380,880 in the week ending Feb. 1, a decrease of 4,463 from
the previous week. There were 433,693 initial claims in the comparable week in
1996.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent during
the week ending Jan. 25, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 3,095,704, an increase of 72,081 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.9 percent and the volume was 3,264,046.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Jan. 18.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,818 in the week ending Jan. 25, a decrease of 729 from the prior
week. There were 1,932 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 184 from the preceding week.
There were 29,748 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Jan. 18, an increase of 1,963 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,178, a decrease of 1,091 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 18 were
in Alaska (6.9 percent), Puerto Rico (5.4), Rhode Island (5.1), Montana (4.6),
Idaho (4.4), West Virginia (4.1), Pennsylvania (3.9), Maine (3.8), Oregon
(3.8), and Washington (3.8).
The largest increase in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 25 was
in Texas (+4,925), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina
(-11,210), California(-9,051), Pennsylvania (-8,850), Tennessee (-8,158), and
Ohio (-6,863).
