SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Jan. 4, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 361,000, a decrease of 13,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 374,000. The 4-week moving average was 357,250, an increase
of 2,750 from the previous week's revised average of 354,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent for the week ending Dec. 28, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Dec. 28 was 2,509,000, a decrease of 45,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,554,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,499,750, a
decrease of 6,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,506,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 533,252 in the week ending Jan. 4, an increase of 10,841
from the previous week. There were 596,079 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5 percent during
the week ending Dec. 28, an increase of 0.4 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UP benefits in state
programs totaled 2,872,263, an increase of 433,418 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.8 percent and the volume was 3,161,482.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Dec. 21.
Initial claims for UP benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,802 in the week ending Dec.28, a decrease of 64 from the prior week.
There were 1,398 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 540
from the preceding week.
There were 29,160 former Federal civilian employees claiming UP benefits
for the week ending Dec. 21, an increase of 604 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,038, a decrease of 1,676 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 21 were
in Alaska (5.4 percent), Puerto Rico (4.4), Washington (4.4), Rhode Island
(3.8), Idaho (3.4), California (3.2), Oregon (3.2), Montana (3.1), Pennsylvania
(2.9), and West Virginia (2.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 28 were
in Michigan (+24,588), Wisconsin (+17,784), Pennsylvania (+10,425),
Massachusetts (+8,371), and Kentucky (+8,204), while the largest decreases were
in Texas (-9,021), Virginia (-5,551), Colorado (-3,235), North Carolina
(-2,187), and California (-1,944).
