SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Dec. 21, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 335,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 350,000. The 4-week moving average was 341,250, a decrease of
1,000 from the previous week's revised average of 342,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent for the week ending Dec. 14, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Dec. 14 was 2,457,000, a decrease of 33,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,490,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,471,000, an
increase of 13,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,458,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 419,464 in the week ending Dec. 21, an increase of 15,004
from the previous week. There were 490,349 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during
the week ending Dec. 14, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,547,658, an
increase of 90,199 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4
percent and the volume was 2,639,023.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Dec. 7.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,220 in the week ending Dec.14, a decrease of 148 from the prior week.
There were 2,127 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 101
from the preceding week.
There were 30,327 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Dec. 7, an increase of 24 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,668, a decrease of 1,503 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 7 were in
Alaska (5.6 percent), Puerto Rico (5.4), Rhode Island (3.7), Washington (3.7),
California (3.5), Oregon (3.3), Arkansas (3.2), Idaho (3.2), Montana (3.1), New
Jersey (3.0), Pennsylvania (3.0), and West Virginia (3.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 14 were
in Texas (+6,005), Virginia (+1,924), Ohio (+1,397), New Jersey (+1,387), and
Massachusetts (+419), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-6,255),
Pennsylvania (-5,070), Missouri (-3,581), Wisconsin (-3,196), and Illinois
(-2,752).
