SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Dec. 14, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 351,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 350,000. The 4-week moving average was 342,500, an increase
of 2,250 from the previous week's revised average of 340,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent for the week ending Dec. 7, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Dec. 7 was 2,505,000, a decrease of 33,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,538,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,462,250, an
increase of 6,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,455,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 405,571 in the week ending Dec. 14, a decrease of 38,683
from the previous week. There were 423,450 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during
the week ending Dec. 7, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week.
The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,472,288, a decrease of 142,194 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 2,658,329.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Nov. 30.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,368 in the week ending Dec.7, an increase of 323 from the prior week.
There were 2,228 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of
791 from the preceding week.
There were 30,315 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Nov. 30, an increase of 3,440 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 24,223, an increase of 3,588 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 30 were
in Alaska (5.8 percent), Puerto Rico (5.2), California (4.4), Washington (3.8),
Montana (3.7), Arkansas (3.6), Rhode Island (3.6), Oregon (3.4), West Virginia
(3.3), Idaho (3.1), and Pennsylvania (3.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 7 were
in California (+27,831), North Carolina (+13,835), Pennsylvania (+12,974),
Michigan (+8,450), and Illinois (+6,429), while the largest decreases were in
Wisconsin (-7,458), Texas (-4,053), Idaho (-241), Arkansas (-154), and Nebraska
(-82).
