SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Dec. 7, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 317,000, a decrease of 13,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 330,000. The 4-week moving average was 332,000, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week's revised average of 335,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent for the week ending Nov. 30, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's revised rate of 2.1 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Nov. 30 was 2,547,000, an increase of 139,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,408,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,459,500, an increase of 16,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,443,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 403,294 in the week ending Dec. 7, an increase of 76,620 from the previous week. There were 421,109 initial claims in the comparable week in 1995.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent during the week ending Nov. 30, an increase of 0.5 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,623,162, an increase of 576,650 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,593,805.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Nov. 23.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,043 in the week ending Nov. 30, a decrease of 349 from the prior week. There were 1,436 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 574 from the preceding week.

There were 27,099 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 23, a decrease of 825 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 20,747, a decrease of 2,070 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 23 were in Puerto Rico (5.2 percent), Alaska (5.0), Rhode Island (3.2), Washington (3.1), Oregon (3.0), Idaho (2.7), Hawaii (2.6), Montana (2.6), California (2.5), and New Jersey (2.5).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 30 were in Wisconsin (+10,192), Indiana (+1,987), Arkansas (+1,685), Massachusetts (+1,550), and Iowa (+845), while the largest decreases were in California (-34,860), North Carolina (-5,684), Pennsylvania (-3,822), New Jersey (-3,780), and Florida (-3,285).
