SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Nov. 30, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 336,000, a decrease of 8,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 344,000. The 4-week moving average was 337,750, an increase
of 1,000 from the previous week's revised average of 336,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent for the week ending Nov. 23, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.1 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Nov. 23 was 2,467,000, an increase of 66,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,401,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,456,750, a
decrease of 3,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,460,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 332,679 in the week ending Nov. 30, a decrease of 55,412
from the previous week. There were 474,548 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during
the week ending Nov. 23, a decrease of 0.2 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,096,537, a decrease of 128,855 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.5 percent and the volume was 2,801,377.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Nov. 16.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,445 in the week ending Nov. 23, an increase of 13 from the prior
week. There were 2,072 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 373 from the preceding week.
There were 27,826 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Nov. 16, a decrease of 498 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,740, an increase of 758 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 16 were
in Alaska (5.5 percent), Puerto Rico (5.3), California (3.4), Rhode Island
(3.3), Washington (3.1), Hawaii (3.0), Oregon (2.9), New Jersey (2.8), Arkansas
(2.7), and Pennsylvania (2.7).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 23 were
in California (+19,564), Texas (+12,288), Minnesota (+3,429), Oregon (+3,175),
and North Carolina (+2,427), while the largest decreases were in Ohio (-1,725),
Alabama (-501), Michigan (-486), Missouri (-325), and Indiana (-200).
