SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Nov. 23, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 342,000, unchanged from the previous week's revised figure
of 342,000. The 4-week moving average was 336,250, unchanged from the previous
week's unrevised average of 336,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1
percent for the week ending Nov. 16, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Nov. 16 was 2,417,000, a decrease of 61,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,478,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,464,000, a
decrease of 4,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,468,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 385,810 in the week ending Nov. 23, an increase of 58,619
from the previous week. There were 336,269 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during
the week ending Nov. 16, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,240,492, an increase of 139,294 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,128,078.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Nov. 9.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,432 in the week ending Nov. 16, an increase of 44 from the prior
week. There were 1,699 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 347 from the preceding week.
There were 28,323 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Nov. 9, an increase of 1,117 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 21,980, a decrease of 1,048 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 9 were in
Alaska (5.2 percent), Puerto Rico (5.1), California (3.2), Rhode Island (3.1),
Washington (3.1), Hawaii (2.7), Oregon (2.7), New Jersey (2.6), Arkansas (2.4),
and Pennsylvania (2.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 16 were
in Illinois (+1,800), Ohio (+1,762), New Jersey (+1,520), Alabama (+858), and
South Carolina (+738), while the largest decreases were in California (-
8,067), Texas (-3,189), Louisiana (-1,666), Washington (-1,489), and Michigan
(-1,308).
