SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Nov. 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 328,000, a decrease of 4,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 332,000. The 4-week moving average was 330,250, a decrease of 3,500 from the previous week's revised average of 333,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent for the week ending Nov. 2, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.2 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Nov. 2 was 2,489,000, an increase of 12,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,477,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,457,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,462,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 338,926 in the week ending Nov. 9, an increase of 18,451 from the previous week. There were 335,181 initial claims in the comparable week in 1995.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during the week ending Nov. 2, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,091,047, an increase of 30,505 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,161,283.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Oct. 26.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,278 in the week ending Nov. 2, an increase of 198 from the prior week. There were 1,901 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 149 from the preceding week.

There were 29,286 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 26, an increase of 1,861 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,307, a decrease of 171 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 26 were in Puerto Rico (5.7 percent), Alaska (4.8), California (3.1), Rhode Island (3.1), Washington (2.8), Hawaii (2.6), New Jersey (2.6), Oregon (2.6), Arkansas (2.4), and Pennsylvania (2.4).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 2 were in California (+6,779), Wisconsin (+2,099), South Carolina (+1,190), Arkansas (+1,030), and Oklahoma (+942), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-3,482), Kansas (-1,005), Georgia (-910), North Carolina (-769), and Puerto Rico (-671).
