SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Nov. 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 331,000, a decrease of 11,000 from the previous week's
unrevised figure of 342,000. The 4-week moving average was 333,500, an increase
of 2,250 from the previous week's unrevised average of 331,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent for the week ending Oct. 26, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.1 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Oct. 26 was 2,488,000, an increase of 51,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,437,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,465,500, a
decrease of 1,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,467,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 318,716 in the week ending Nov. 2, an increase of 6,589
from the previous week. There were 383,687 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during
the week ending Oct. 26, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,069,964, an
increase of 28,148 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.0
percent and the volume was 2,256,758.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Oct. 19.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,067 in the week ending Oct. 26, a decrease of 41 from the prior week.
There were 2,053 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of
111 from the preceding week.
There were 27,500 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Oct. 19, a decrease of 1,521 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,535, an increase of 887 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 19 were
in Puerto Rico (5.5 percent), Alaska (4.6), California (3.0), Rhode Island
(3.0), Washington (2.7), Hawaii (2.6), New Jersey (2.6), Oregon (2.6),
Pennsylvania (2.5), Arkansas (2.3), and Delaware (2.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 26 were
in Michigan (+8,049), Ohio (+6,993), California (+3,829), Pennsylvania
(+2,751), and Illinois (+2,407), while the largest decreases were in Puerto
Rico (-1,566), Mississippi (-1,012), North Carolina (-798), Tennessee (-589),
and South Carolina (-448).
