SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Sept. 28, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 340,000, unchanged from the previous week's unrevised figure
of 340,000. The 4-week moving average was 334,500, an increase of 5,750 from
the previous week's unrevised average of 328,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent for the week ending Sept. 21, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Sept. 21 was 2,461,000, a decrease of 28,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,489,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,485,250, a
decrease of 11,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,496,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 260,132 in the week ending Sept. 28, a decrease
of 13,041 from the previous week. There were 269,067 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during
the week ending Sept. 21, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,025,299, a
decrease of 53,248 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9
percent and the volume was 2,137,750.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week
ending Sept. 14.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,067 in the week ending Sept. 21, a decrease of 186 from the prior
week. There were 2,282 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 49 from the preceding week.
There were 27,210 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Sept. 14, an increase of 2,634 from the previous week.
Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,087, an increase of 596
from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 14 were
in Puerto Rico (7.4 percent), Alaska (3.3), Rhode Island (3.2), California
(3.1), Hawaii (2.8), New Jersey (2.7), Washington (2.7), Pennsylvania (2.5),
Oregon (2.4), Arkansas (2.2), Connecticut (2.2), Delaware (2.2), and New York
(2.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Sept. 21 were in Puerto Rico (+8,638), Michigan (+1,310), Ohio (+754), Georgia
(+708), and Oklahoma (+608), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina
(-1,990), New York (-1,886), Illinois (-1,697), Tennessee (-1,075), and South
Carolina (-891).
