SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Sept. 14, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 329,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 331,000. The 4-week moving average was 326,750, an increase
of 750 from the previous week's revised average of 326,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1
percent for the week ending Sept. 7, a decrease of 0.2 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Sept. 7 was 2,419,000, a decrease of 170,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,589,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,507,500, a
decrease of 21,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,528,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 272,783 in the week ending Sept. 14, an increase of 33,161
from the previous week. There were 304,323 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during
the week ending Sept. 7, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,119,045, an
increase of 8,852 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1
percent and the volume was 2,285,481.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week
ending Aug. 31.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,905 in the week ending Sept. 7, an increase of 233 from the prior
week. There were 2,071 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 148 from the preceding week.
There were 26,270 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Aug. 31, an increase of 1,282 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,446, a decrease of 393 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 31 were
in Puerto Rico (5.6 percent), Rhode Island (3.5), Alaska (3.4), California
(2.9), New Jersey (2.9), Washington (2.9), Hawaii (2.8), Oregon (2.6),
Pennsylvania (2.6), Connecticut (2.4), and New York (2.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 7 were
in Ohio (+1,148), Pennsylvania (+770), Maryland (+703), Arkansas (+520), and
Wisconsin (+495), while the largest decreases were in California (-2,744),
Michigan (-2,400), New York (-1,621), Tennessee (-1,442), and South Carolina
(-1,243).
