SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Aug. 31, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 316,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 331,000. The 4-week moving average was 323,500, an increase of 500 from the previous week's revised average of 323,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent for the week ending Aug. 24, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.2 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Aug. 24 was 2,525,000, an increase of 8,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,517,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,503,000, an increase of 2,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,500,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 250,053 in the week ending Aug. 31, a decrease of 9,899 from the previous week. There were 278,652 initial claims in the comparable week in 1995.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during the week ending Aug. 24, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,255,184, a decrease of 25,221 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,334,677.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Aug. 17.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,898 in the week ending Aug. 24, an increase of 13 from the prior week. There were 2,337 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 75 from the preceding week.

There were 28,110 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 17, an increase of 1,416 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,701, an increase of 27 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 17 were in Puerto Rico (6.4 percent), Rhode Island (3.9), Alaska (3.6), Hawaii (3.2), California (3.1), New Jersey (3.1), Washington (3.1), Pennsylvania (2.8), Oregon (2.7), and Connecticut (2.6).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 24 were in Tennessee (+1,061), New Mexico (+686), Texas (+579), Puerto Rico (+433), and Kentucky (+411), while the largest decreases were in California (-1,627), Delaware (-1,564), Michigan (-1,350), Ohio (-1,006), and Alabama (-971).
