SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 20, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 322,000, a decrease of 45,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 367,000. The 4-week moving average was 352,500, a decrease of 8,000 from the previous week's revised average of 360,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending July 13, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 13 was 2,584,000, an increase of 28,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,556,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,585,250, an increase of 3,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,582,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 361,037 in the week ending July 20, a decrease of 88,487 from the previous week. There were 409,319 initial claims in the comparable week in 1995.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent during the week ending July 13, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,563,167, an increase of 73,262 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 2,704,053.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the week ending July 6.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 3,498 in the week ending July 13, an increase of 236 from the prior week. There were 2,427 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 392 from the preceding week.

There were 27,183 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 6, an increase of 4,189 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,436, an increase of 594 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 6 were in Puerto Rico (5.2 percent), Rhode Island (4.5), Alaska (4.2), California (3.4), Washington (3.3), Hawaii (3.2), Oregon (3.2), Pennsylvania (3.2), Arkansas (3.1), and New Jersey (3.1).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 13 were in North Carolina (+16,782), Tennessee (+12,441), Alabama (+12,307), South Carolina (+7,172), and California (+4,050), while the largest decreases were in Wisconsin (-4,635), Massachusetts (-2,801), Illinois (-2,314), Texas (-1,561), and Oregon (-745).
