SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 13, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 306,000, a decrease of 37,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 343,000. The 4-week moving average was 350,000, a decrease of 12,250 from the previous week's revised average of 362,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Jan. 6, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.0 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Jan. 6 was 2,373,000, a decrease of 201,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,574,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,466,750, an increase of 15,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,451,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 602,235 in the week ending Jan. 13, an increase of 45,989 from the previous week. There were 442,462 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5 percent during the week ending Jan. 6, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,127,444, an increase of 180,021 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,686,016.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Dec. 30.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,172 in the week ending Jan. 6, an increase of 980 from the prior week. There were 1,057 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 261 from the preceding week.

There were 27,471 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec.30, an increase of 268 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,086, an increase of 508 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 30 were in Alaska (6.1 percent), Puerto Rico (4.6), Wisconsin (4.1), Idaho (4.0), Arkansas (3.9), Michigan (3.9), Oregon (3.8), Washington (3.7), Rhode Island (3.5), and Pennsylvania (3.4).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 6 were in New York (+19,058), South Carolina (+16,456), North Carolina (+12,221), Tennessee (+10,455), and Georgia (+9,159), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-21,602), Wisconsin (-18,998), Iowa (-10,276), Kentucky (-9,229), and Indiana (-8,413).
