SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 6, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 345,000, a decrease of 36,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 381,000. The 4-week moving average was 363,000, an increase of 6,250 from the previous week's revised average of 356,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent for the week ending Dec. 30, unchanged  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.0 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Dec. 30 was 2,503,000, a decrease of 46,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,549,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,430,250, an increase of 64,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,366,250.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 559,678 in the week ending Jan. 6, a decrease of 13,456 from the previous week. There were 606,859 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent during the week ending Dec. 30, an increase of 0.3 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,865,927, an increase of 353,013 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,761,926.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Dec. 23.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,193 in the week ending Dec. 30, a decrease of 533 from the prior week. There were 794 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 237 from the preceding week.

There were 27,180 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec.23, a decrease of 1,017 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,653, a decrease of249 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 23 were in Alaska (5.7 percent), Puerto Rico (4.4), Idaho (3.3), Oregon (3.3), Washington (3.3), Montana (3.0), Wisconsin (3.0), Arkansas (2.9), Pennsylvania (2.8), and Michigan (2.7).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 30 were in Michigan (+27,500), Wisconsin (+17,125), North Carolina (+16,841), Pennsylvania (+9,983), and Massachusetts (+7,544), while the largest decreases were in Illinois (-9,869), California (-8,194), Missouri (-7,205), Kansas (-3,314), and Arkansas (-1,972).
