SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Dec. 30, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 375,000, an increase of 16,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 359,000. The 4-week moving average was 352,250, an increase of 5,250 from the previous week's revised average of 347,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent for the week ending Dec. 23, an increase of 0.1 percentage point  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Dec. 23 was 2,520,000, an increase of 175,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,345,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,355,500, an increase of 43,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,311,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 564,896 in the week ending Dec. 30, an increase of 96,256 from the previous week. There were 439,633 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during the week ending Dec. 23, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,484,737, an increase of 142,290 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,246,637.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Dec. 16.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,696 in the week ending Dec. 23, an increase of 245 from the prior week. There were 1,037 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of  60 from the preceding week.

There were 27,816 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec. 16, a decrease of 2,055 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,896, a decrease of 320 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 16 were in Alaska (5.3 percent), Puerto Rico (4.4), Washington (3.2), Idaho (3.1), Oregon (3.1), Arkansas (2.9),  Montana (2.7),  Pennsylvania (2.7), Wisconsin (2.6),  and California (2.5).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 23 were in Missouri (+9,414), Kentucky (+8,026), Michigan (+7,598), Pennsylvania (+6,330), and Ohio (+4,145), while the largest decreases were  in Georgia  (-4,232), Indiana (-3,133), West Virginia (-1,934), Virginia (-1,285), and Colorado (-628).
