DATA
In the week ending Dec. 23, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 333,000, a decrease
of 23,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 356,000. The 4-week
moving average was 340,750, a decrease of 7,000 from the previous week's
revised average of 347,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment
rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Dec. 16, an increase of 0.1
percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Dec. 16 was 2,337,000, an increase
of 32,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,305,000. The 4-week
moving average was 2,308,500, an increase of 3,000 from the preceding
week's revised average of 2,305,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 434,969 in the week ending Dec. 23, an
increase of 31,095 from the previous week. There were 377,695 initial
claims in the comparable week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent during the week ending Dec. 16, an increase of 0.1 percentage
point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming
UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,335,015, an increase of 25,246
from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the
volume was 2,099,639.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending Dec. 9.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,454 in the week ending Dec. 16, a decrease of 828
from the prior week. There were 1,095 initial claims by newly discharged
veterans, a decrease of 51 from the preceding week.
There were 29,595 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec. 9, an increase of 1,138 from
the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,316,
an increase of 593 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Dec. 9 were in Alaska (5.7 percent), Puerto Rico (4.9), Washington (3.0),
Oregon (2.9), West Virginia (2.8), Idaho (2.7), Montana (2.7),
Pennsylvania (2.7), California (2.6), and Arkansas
(2.5).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week
ending Dec. 16 were in Illinois (+5,077), Indiana (+4,201), Kansas
(+2,953), Florida (+2,855), and Missouri (+2,649), while the largest decreases
were in North Carolina (-6,141), Ohio (-3,483),
Pennsylvania (-3,174), Georgia (-2,999), and Tennessee
(-2,894).
