ETA Press Release: Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report [12/21/2000]

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Dec. 16, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 354,000, an increase of 34,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 320,000. The 4-week moving average was 347,250, an increase of 3,500 from the previous week's revised average of 343,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent for the week ending Dec. 9, unchanged  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Dec. 9 was 2,323,000, an increase of 79,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,244,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,309,250, an increase of 23,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,286,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 401,925 in the week ending Dec. 16, an increase of 11,419 from the previous week. There were 329,649 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during the week ending Dec. 9, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,327,792, an increase of 119,754 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,146,849.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Dec. 2.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,277 in the week ending Dec. 9, an increase of 56 from the prior week. There were 1,143 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of  55 from the preceding week.

There were 28,489 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec. 2, a decrease of 1,774 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,752, a decrease of 796 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 2 were in Alaska (5.0 percent), Puerto Rico (4.9), Washington (3.0), Oregon (2.9), Arkansas (2.6), Idaho (2.6),  Pennsylvania (2.6), California (2.5),  Montana (2.4), Nevada (2.3), and Rhode Island (2.3).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 9 were in Ohio (+6,363), Illinois (+2,172), Delaware (+1,531), Kentucky (+1,105), and Massachusetts (+846), while the largest decreases were  in North Carolina  (-16,241), South Carolina (-10,756), New York(-8,408), California (-7,333), and  Tennessee (-5,318).
