ETA Press Release: Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report [12/14/2000]

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Dec. 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 320,000, a decrease of 32,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 352,000. The 4-week moving average was 343,250, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's unrevised average of 345,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent for the week ending Dec. 2, unchanged  from the prior week's revised rate of 1.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Dec. 2 was 2,264,000, a decrease of 21,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,285,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,276,000, an increase of 14,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,261,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 390,314 in the week ending Dec. 9, a decrease of 54,639 from the previous week. There were 318,175 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during the week ending Dec. 2, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,228,185, a decrease of 105,286 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,050,291.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Nov. 25.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,289 in the week ending Dec. 2, an increase of 441 from the prior week. There were 1,178 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of  414 from the preceding week.

There were 29,295 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 25, an increase of 4,238 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,375, an increase of 1,927 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 25 were in Alaska (5.6 percent), Oregon (3.0), Washington (3.0), Arkansas (2.9), Illinois (2.7), West Virginia (2.7), Wisconsin (2.7), Idaho (2.6),  Montana (2.6), California (2.5), and Pennsylvania (2.5).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 2 were in North Carolina (+28,631), South Carolina (+15,368), California (+14,086), New York (+11,505), and Pennsylvania (+10,237), while the largest decreases were  in Wisconsin (-14,930), Oregon (-1,957), Kentucky(-1,644), Iowa (-1,438), and Louisiana (-748).
