ETA Press Release: Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report [12/07/2000]

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Dec. 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 352,000, a decrease of 9,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 361,000. The 4-week moving average was 345,250, an increase of 1,250 from the previous week's revised average of 344,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Nov. 25, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's revised rate of 1.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Nov. 25 was 2,350,000, an increase of 25,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,325,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,278,000, an increase of 37,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,240,250.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 444,672 in the week ending Dec. 2, an increase of 124,152 from the previous week. There were 378,735 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during the week ending Nov. 25, an increase of 0.4 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,399,248, an increase of 560,468 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,190,468.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Nov. 18.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,848 in the week ending Nov. 25, a decrease of 493 from the prior week. There were 764 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of  340 from the preceding week.

There were 25,057 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 18, a decrease of 2,980 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 11,448, a decrease of 1,591 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 18 were in Alaska (4.6 percent), Washington (2.6), Oregon (2.5), Arkansas (2.3), California (2.2), Idaho (2.1), Montana (2.0), Nevada (2.0),  Puerto Rico (2.0), and Rhode Island (2.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 25 were in Wisconsin (+16,919), Ohio (+2,314), Oregon (+1,556), Indiana (+1,267), and Iowa (+972), while the largest decreases were  in California (-18,823), Texas (-5,289), Alabama (-4,203), Missouri (-4,013), and North Carolina (-3,825).
