DATA
In the week ending Nov. 25, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 358,000, an increase
of 19,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 339,000. The 4-week
moving average was 343,000, an increase of 12,000 from the previous week's
revised average of 331,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment
rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Nov. 18, an increase of 0.1
percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Nov. 18 was 2,338,000, an increase
of 109,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,229,000. The
4-week moving average was 2,243,250, an increase of 43,250 from the
preceding week's revised average of 2,200,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 317,770 in the week ending Nov. 25, a
decrease of 58,314 from the previous week. There were 268,255 initial claims in
the comparable week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5
percent during the week ending Nov. 18, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 1,849,481, a decrease of 156,982 from the
preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.4 percent and the volume was
1,777,254.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending Nov. 11.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,341 in the week ending Nov. 18, a decrease of 257
from the prior week. There were 1,098 initial claims by newly discharged
veterans, an increase of 242 from the preceding week.
There were 28,035 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 11, an increase of 4,624
from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled
13,038, an increase of 1,129 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Nov. 11 were in Puerto Rico (5.2 percent), Alaska (5.1), Washington (2.6),
Oregon (2.5), Arkansas (2.4), California (2.3), Pennsylvania
(2.2), Nevada (2.1), Michigan (2.0), and New Jersey (2.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week
ending Nov. 18 were in California (+13,567), Illinois (+8,656),
Pennsylvania (+5,387), Alabama (+3,664), and New Jersey (+3,137), while the
largest decreases were in Kentucky (-738), South Carolina (-303),
Maine (-206), Mississippi (-131), and the District of Columbia (-19).
