ETA Press Release: Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report [11/22/2000]

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Nov. 18, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 336,000, an increase of 7,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 329,000. The 4-week moving average was 330,500, an increase of 7,250 from the previous week's revised average of 323,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent for the week ending Nov. 11, unchanged  from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Nov. 11 was 2,244,000, an increase of 31,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,213,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,205,250, an increase of 12,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,193,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 372,548 in the week ending Nov. 18, an increase of 78,655 from the previous week. There were 309,248 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending Nov. 11, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,019,899, an increase of  253,531 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.5 percent and the volume was 1,866,516.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Nov. 4.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,597 in the week ending Nov. 11, an increase of 325 from the prior week. There were 856 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of  170 from the preceding week.

There were 23,669 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 4, a decrease of 3,437 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 11,910, a decrease of 824 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 4 were in Puerto Rico (4.8 percent), Alaska (4.2), Washington (2.4), Oregon (2.3), Arkansas (2.2), California (1.9), Nevada (1.9), Pennsylvania (1.9), Rhode Island (1.9),  New Jersey (1.7), and South Carolina (1.7).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 11 were in Texas (+2,204), Minnesota (+2,095), Kentucky (+2,055), New York (+1,678), and Arkansas    (+1,011), while the largest decreases were in California   (-11,615), Michigan (-9,219), Illinois (-5,920), North Carolina (-5,579), and Georgia (-4,783).
