In the week ending Nov. 11, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 326,000, a decrease of 20,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 346,000. The 4-week moving average was
322,250, an increase of 4,250 from the previous week's revised average of
318,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.8 percent for the week ending Nov. 4, an increase of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week's revised rate of 1.7 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Nov. 4 was 2,225,000, an increase of 22,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,203,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,197,000, an increase of 8,000 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,189,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 291,547 in the week ending Nov. 11, a decrease of
50,372 from the previous week. There were 262,607 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4
percent during the week ending Nov. 4, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 1,775,477, a decrease of 55,030 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.4 percent and the volume was 1,758,806.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending Oct. 28.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,312 in the week ending Nov. 4, an increase of 412 from the
prior week. There were 1,032 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 20 from the preceding week.
There were 27,126 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 28, an increase of 2,604 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,803, an
increase of 505 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Oct. 28 were in Puerto Rico (4.8 percent), Alaska (4.5), Oregon (2.4),
Washington (2.3), Arkansas (2.1), California (2.1), Nevada (2.0), Pennsylvania
(2.0), New Jersey (1.9), and Rhode Island (1.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week
ending Nov. 4 were in Michigan (+ 15,598), California (+12,683), Illinois
(+5,322), Georgia (+4,855), and North Carolina (+4,337), while the largest
decreases were in Oregon (-999), Kansas (-135), Ohio (-123), New Mexico (-76),
and the Virgin Islands (-3).
