SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Oct. 28, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 308,000, unchanged from the previous week's revised figure of 308,000. The 4-week moving average was 309,750, an increase of 1,750 from the previous week's revised average of 308,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent for the week ending Oct. 21, unchanged from the prior week's revised rate of 1.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Oct. 21 was 2,178,000, a decrease of 18,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,196,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,182,000, an increase of 10,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,171,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 268,354 in the week ending Oct. 28, an increase of 2,222 from the previous week. There were 257,767 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4 percent during the week ending Oct. 21, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,768,512, a decrease of 34,521 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.4 percent and the volume was 1,735,699.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Oct. 14.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,183 in the week ending Oct. 21, a decrease of 458 from the prior week. There were 1,079 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 58 from the preceding week.

There were 26,936 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 14, an increase of 5,061 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,795, an increase of 618 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 14 were in Puerto Rico (6.7 percent), Alaska (4.2), Oregon (2.3), Washington (2.1), Arkansas (2.0), California (2.0), Nevada (2.0), Pennsylvania (2.0), New Jersey (1.9), and Rhode Island (1.9).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 21 were in California (+2,638), Ohio (+2,156), Georgia (+1,726), Puerto Rico (+1,373), and New Jersey (+1,278), while the largest decreases were in Virginia (-1,415), Oregon (-1,346), Texas (-992), Tennessee (-813), and Missouri (-397).
