In the week ending Oct. 14, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 307,000, a decrease of 7,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 314,000. The 4-week moving average was
302,750, a decrease of 750 from the previous week's revised average of
303,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.8 percent for the week ending Oct. 7, an increase of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Oct. 7 was 2,207,000, an increase of 45,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,162,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,163,250, an increase of 10,000 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,153,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 252,112 in the week ending Oct. 14, a decrease of
40,804 from the previous week. There were 234,580 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4
percent during the week ending Oct. 7, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 1,703,805, a decrease of 10,745 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 1.4 percent and the volume was 1,692,025.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending Sept. 30.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 5,648 in the week ending Oct. 7, an increase of 3,510 from
the prior week. There were 1,276 initial claims by newly discharged veterans,
an increase of 250 from the preceding week.
There were 19,995 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 30, a decrease of 465 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,618, an
increase of 52 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Sept. 30 were in Puerto Rico (5.0 percent), Alaska (3.5), Oregon (2.1),
California (2.0), Washington (2.0), Arkansas (1.9), Nevada (1.9), New Jersey
(1.9), Rhode Island (1.9), and Pennsylvania (1.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Oct. 7 were in North Carolina (+8,843), Texas (+5,625), California (+4,913),
Pennsylvania (+4,484), and Tennessee (+4,000), while the largest decreases were
in Florida (-513), Iowa (-46), and Oregon (-26).
