SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Oct. 7, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 306,000, an increase of 5,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 301,000. The 4-week moving average was 301,500, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week's revised average of 306,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent for the week ending Sept. 30, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 30 was 2,168,000, an increase of 30,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,138,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,155,250, a decrease of 15,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,171,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 285,842 in the week ending Oct. 7, an increase of 59,988 from the previous week. There were 278,925 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4 percent during the week ending Sept. 30, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,719,367, a decrease of 12,420 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.4 percent and the volume was 1,725,820.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Sept. 23.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,137 in the week ending Sept. 30, an increase of 459 from the prior week. There were 1,024 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 62 from the preceding week.

There were 20,499 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 23, an increase of 697 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,805, an increase of 435 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 23 were in Puerto Rico (5.0 percent), Alaska (3.3), California (2.0), Oregon (2.0), Rhode Island (2.0), Washington (2.0), Arkansas (1.9), Nevada (1.9), New Jersey (1.9), and Pennsylvania (1.9).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 30 were in California (+2,125), Florida (+1,645), Oregon (+1,585), Kentucky (+1,453), and Pennsylvania (+615), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-3,072), Tennessee (-1,552), Illinois (-322), Mississippi (-287), and Indiana (-258).
