SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Sept. 30, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 299,000, an increase of 10,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 289,000. The 4-week moving average was 306,000, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week's revised average of 309,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent for the week ending Sept. 23, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 23 was 2,153,000, a decrease of 14,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,167,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,179,500, a decrease of 4,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,183,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 224,398 in the week ending Sept. 30, an increase of 1,518 from the previous week. There were 246,445 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4 percent during the week ending Sept. 23, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,744,060, a decrease of 30,647 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.4 percent and the volume was 1,763,215.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Sept. 16.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,666 in the week ending Sept. 23, a decrease of 564 from the prior week. There were 1,078 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 62 from the preceding week.

There were 19,957 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 16, an increase of 43 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,668, an increase of 36 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 16 were in Puerto Rico (6.4 percent), Alaska (3.4), New Jersey (2.1), California (2.0), Rhode Island (2.0), Oregon (2.0), Washington (2.0), Arkansas (1.9), Nevada (1.9), and Pennsylvania (1.9).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 23 were in Virginia (+722), California (+519), Tennessee (+215), Missouri (+200), and Indiana (+155), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-8,562), South Carolina (-2,643), Ohio (-1,984), New York (-1,896), and Florida (-1,653).
