In the week ending Sept. 23, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 287,000, a decrease of 24,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 311,000. The 4-week moving average was
308,750, a decrease of 7,750 from the previous week's revised average of
316,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.7 percent for the week ending Sept. 16, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Sept. 16 was 2,179,000, an increase of
7,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,172,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,187,750, an increase of 4,750 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,183,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 221,311 in the week ending Sept. 23, a decrease
of 25,489 from the previous week. There were 232,486 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4
percent during the week ending Sept. 16, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI
benefits in state programs totaled 1,784,907, a decrease of 89,612 from the
preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.5 percent and the volume was
1,783,550.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending Sept. 9.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,223 in the week ending Sept. 16, an increase of 355 from
the prior week. There were 1,123 initial claims by newly discharged veterans,
an increase of 114 from the preceding week.
There were 19,936 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 9, an increase of 2,403 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,880, an
increase of 1,031 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Sept. 9 were in Puerto Rico (6.4 percent), Alaska (3.3), New Jersey (2.2),
Oregon (2.2), California (2.1), Pennsylvania (2.1), Rhode Island (2.1),
Washington (2.1), Arkansas (2.0), and Nevada (1.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Sept. 16 were in North Carolina (+8,936), South Carolina (+3,574), California
(+2,584), New York (+2,453), and Ohio (+1,538), while the largest decreases
were in Missouri (-1,719), Texas (-1,536), Oregon (-1,437), Michigan (-1,240),
and Wisconsin (-552).
