In the week ending Sept. 16, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 308,000, a decrease of 18,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 326,000. The 4-week moving average was
315,750, a decrease of 3,250 from the previous week's revised average of
319,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.7 percent for the week ending Sept. 9, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Sept. 9 was 2,185,000, a decrease of 44,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,229,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,185,750, an increase of 9,500 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,176,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 244,210 in the week ending Sept. 16, an increase
of 15,693 from the previous week. There were 219,070 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5
percent during the week ending Sept. 9, an increase of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI
benefits in state programs totaled 1,885,924, an increase of 76,263 from the
preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.5 percent and the volume was
1,856,169.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending Sept. 2.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,867 in the week ending Sept. 9, a decrease of 88 from the
prior week. There were 1,009 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 91 from the preceding week.
There were 21,036 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 2, an increase of 2,274 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,090, a
decrease of 458 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Sept. 2 were in Puerto Rico (3.9 percent), Alaska (3.1), New Jersey (2.3),
Rhode Island (2.3), Oregon (2.2), Washington (2.2), Arkansas (2.0), California
(2.0), Pennsylvania (2.0), Massachusetts (1.7), New York (1.7), and West
Virginia (1.7).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Sept. 9 were in Oregon (+1,857), Missouri (+1,277), Louisiana (+698), Maine
(+517), and Alabama (+386), while the largest decreases were in New York
(-1,734), Minnesota (-1,649), Texas (-1,587), Massachusetts (-1,586), and
California (-1,522).
