In the week ending Sept. 9, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 324,000, an increase of 13,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 311,000. The 4-week moving average was
318,500, an increase of 2,500 from the previous week's revised average of
316,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.8 percent for the week ending Sept. 2, an increase of 0.1 percentage
point from the prior week's revised rate of 1.7 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Sept. 2 was 2,245,000, an increase of
81,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,164,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,179,000, an increase of 37,250 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,141,750.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 227,366 in the week ending Sept. 9, a decrease of
16,174 from the previous week. There were 204,302 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5
percent during the week ending Sept. 2, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 1,822,628, a decrease of 100,957 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 1.5 percent and the volume was 1,813,976.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending Aug. 26.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,951 in the week ending Sept. 2, an increase of 59 from the
prior week. There were 1,097 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 18 from the preceding week.
There were 18,688 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 26, an increase of 872 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,716, an
increase of 453 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Aug. 26 were in Puerto Rico (6.2 percent), Alaska (3.3), Rhode Island (2.6),
New Jersey (2.4), Pennsylvania (2.3), Oregon (2.2), Washington (2.2),
California (2.1), Arkansas (2.0), Massachusetts (1.9), and West Virginia
(1.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Sept. 2 were in Texas (+2,306), Massachusetts (+1,797), Minnesota (+1,760),
Michigan (+1,743), and North Carolina (+1,518), while the largest decreases
were in New York (-2,107), Ohio (-1,928), West Virginia (-1,323), Virginia
(-928), and South Carolina (-830).
