SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Sept. 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 316,000, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 319,000. The 4-week moving average was 317,500, an increase of 4,250 from the previous week's revised average of 313,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent for the week ending Aug. 26, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Aug. 26 was 2,204,000, an increase of 40,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,164,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,152,750, an increase of 25,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,127,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 247,394 in the week ending Sept. 2, an increase of 8,649 from the previous week. There were 235,849 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending Aug. 26, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,959,079, an increase of 24,398 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 1,933,993.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Aug. 19.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,892 in the week ending Aug. 26, a decrease of 232 from the prior week. There were 1,113 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 35 from the preceding week.

There were 17,857 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 19, a decrease of 940 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,533, a decrease of 137 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 19 were in Puerto Rico (3.7 percent), Alaska (3.4), Rhode Island (2.6), New Jersey (2.4), Oregon (2.3), Pennsylvania (2.3), Washington (2.3), California (2.1), Arkansas (2.0), Massachusetts (1.9), and West Virginia (1.9).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 26 were in Ohio (+2,175), South Carolina (+982), West Virginia (+968), Virginia (+774), and Missouri (+394), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-8,333), Massachusetts (-3,701), Georgia (-1,607), New Jersey (-721), and California (-653).
