SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Aug. 26, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 318,000, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 321,000. The 4-week moving average was 313,000, an increase of 10,750 from the previous week's revised average of 302,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent for the week ending Aug. 19, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Aug. 19 was 2,178,000, an increase of 31,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,147,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,130,500, an increase of 24,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,106,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 238,088 in the week ending Aug. 26, a decrease of 13,551 from the previous week. There were 219,278 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending Aug. 19, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,947,233, a decrease of 39,029 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 1,981,518.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Aug. 12.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,122 in the week ending Aug. 19, a decrease of 108 from the prior week. There were 1,147 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 3 from the preceding week.

There were 18,796 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 12, an increase of 1,553 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,670, an increase of 320 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 12 were in Puerto Rico (5.4 percent), Alaska (3.5), Rhode Island (2.6), New Jersey (2.4), Oregon (2.4), Pennsylvania (2.4), Washington (2.3), Arkansas (2.1), California (2.1), Massachusetts (1.9), Mississippi (1.9), and West Virginia (1.9).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 19 were in North Carolina (+7,427), New York (+1,217), Massachusetts (+1,112), New Jersey (+597), and Texas (+460), while the largest decreases were in California (-4,993), Missouri (-4,639), Illinois (-3,641), Oregon (-1,443), and Pennsylvania (-879).
