SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Aug. 19, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 314,000, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 310,000. The 4-week moving average was 299,500, an increase of 10,250 from the previous week's revised average of 289,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent for the week ending Aug. 12, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Aug. 12 was 2,102,000, an increase of 3,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,099,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,095,500, a decrease of 18,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,113,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 246,039 in the week ending Aug. 19, a decrease of 11,990 from the previous week. There were 226,061 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending Aug. 12, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,944,213, a decrease of 28,399 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,025,904.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Aug. 5.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,214 in the week ending Aug. 12, an increase of 85 from the prior week. There were 1,139 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 146 from the preceding week.

There were 17,391 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 5, a decrease of 1,003 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,338, an increase of 101 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 5 were in Puerto Rico (5.7 percent), Alaska (3.4), Rhode Island (2.7), New Jersey (2.4), Washington (2.4), Oregon (2.3), Pennsylvania (2.3), Arkansas (2.1), California (2.1), and Mississippi (2.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 12 were in Missouri (+3,971), Illinois (+3,000), Georgia (+1,169), New York (+714), and Indiana (+491), while the largest decreases were in California (-2,866), North Carolina (-2,492), Texas (-1,723), Wisconsin (-1,694), and Connecticut (-1,407).
