SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Aug. 12, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 313,000, an increase of 14,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 299,000. The 4-week moving average was 290,000, unchanged from the previous week's revised average of 290,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent for the week ending Aug. 5, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Aug. 5 was 2,107,000, an increase of 7,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,100,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,115,500, a decrease of 5,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,120,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA



The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 260,098 in the week ending Aug. 12, a decrease of 6,431 from the previous week. There were 236,658 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending Aug, 5, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,980,367, a decrease of 27,482 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,054,099.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending July 29.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,125 in the week ending Aug. 5, an increase of 212 from the prior week. There were 1,284 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 150 from the preceding week.

There were 18,481 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 29, an increase of 2,236 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,501, an increase of 611 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 29 were in Puerto Rico (6.5 percent), Alaska (3.5), Rhode Island (2.7), New Jersey (2.4), Pennsylvania (2.4), Oregon (2.3), Washington (2.3), California (2.2), Arkansas (2.0), Delaware (1.9), Massachusetts (1.9), Mississippi (1.9), and West Virginia (1.9).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 5 were in California (+6,544), Texas (+2,199), Puerto Rico (+1,891), Connecticut (+1,412), and Wisconsin (+1,301), while the largest decreases were in Ohio (-3,265), Michigan (-1,666), Georgia (-1,379), Delaware (-949), and Alabama (-769).
