SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Aug. 5, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 293,000, an increase of 18,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 275,000. The 4-week moving average was 288,500, a decrease of 6,750 from the previous week's revised average of 295,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent for the week ending July 29, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 29 was 2,092,000, an increase of 2,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,090,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,121,000, a decrease of 7,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,128,250.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 261,325 in the week ending Aug. 5, an increase of 8,159 from the previous week. There were 259,805 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending July 29, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,999,695, a decrease of 18,800 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,071,173.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending July 22.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,913 in the week ending July 29, a decrease of 386 from the prior week. There were 1,134 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 10 from the preceding week.

There were 16,353 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 22, a decrease of 266 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,169, an increase of 194 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 22 were in Puerto Rico (3.7 percent), Alaska (3.5), Rhode Island (2.8), New Jersey (2.4), Oregon (2.3), Pennsylvania (2.3), Washington (2.3), California (2.2), Arkansas (2.1), and Michigan (2.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 29 were in Wisconsin (+611), Indiana (+418), Maryland (+383), Washington (+274), and Idaho (+231), while the largest decreases were in Tennessee (-7,699), Michigan (-5,974), South Carolina (-2,893), Georgia (-2,418), and Ohio (-2,342).
